Carpet Fitters.

Started by: Billinge Biker (2384)

Tell thi what....in my next life I won't have a fleet of Hackney carriages as I have spouted on many times before... treated my lad to new carpets in his 2 bedroom house...plus stairs and landing.. £220 for fitting...no underlay required..there for less than two hours...good job... Bloody Kings Council don't earn that...

Its the hidden things you don't see BB, They took 10 years learning how to fit carpets professionally in 2 hours, You might have got a gypo to do it for £50 and he would have cut it wrong so, you did the right thing,,

Factored into that price will be he had to drive to collect the carpet, and get it into his van, and get rid of any surplus. So that's another hour maybe more . Unless you took it to the tip. Petrol doesn't come cheap.

I think you may have been robbed the guy I buy all our carpets and for my daughter's house the fitting is free and i do have to say he will beat anyone else in price and the quality of his carpets are first class . GB

GB probably more accurate to say fitting inclusive in the price of carpet .

I would expect all trades to be paying themselves much less than their charge out rates, which is what the customer sees. Not only have expenses to be covered, but the chargeable hours they accrue, in say a year, is likely to be much less than the hours actually worked to sustain that activity level.

Next time tell him you don't want them fitting and see what happens to the price

We are often asked, “how much would they be if I fit them myself” ?
The answer is always, “same price”!
Then we get the , “These are the measurements, my husband’s measured, he’s not daft”! and the measurements will be in centimetres!!!

No Chance, try Hilary’s!

Shutters are shit.
I’ve fitted hundreds, all mega bucks, but they take too much light from the room. Whatever, I get paid for fitting it and I don’t do it for nowt!

It's one thing fitting a carpet to a rectangular shaped room, a lot of folk can put underlay down, screw battens to the floor and stretch and tack carpet into place, I have done that, but when yoo see a carpet fitter, fitting carpet to the circular steps of stairs at the bottom, where the step overhangs and the carpet is wrapped around it neat and tidy, now that requires skill

Aye, tommy.

'Tis sad to see the lack of respect now commonplace for the skills some people employ to make life sweet for the rest of us.

£220 sounds a lot to me. My last carpet, Wigan area last year cost £40 and it was a contractor paid separately to the carpet shop. It wasn't a big job though

Tom

"nailing batterns to the floor needs more skill than you give credit for, I know as it has gained me lots of . nailed pipe repairs than I can remember"

Funny yoo say that, because when I were six, me parents had a carpet fitted, and in the living room a couple of days later I noticed that there was a wet patch in front of the fireplace, and the floor was made from asphalt, so being a good kid I told me mum about it, who promptly on examining it accused me of spilling something on it, when me dad came home he also accused me of spilling something on it, after much bother me brother found that the floor was leaking, so a plumber was called, and he came and did his plumbing stuff and the leak was fixed, and it was the carpet fitter who had caused it

Thats right Tommy, nailing to floors has hidden consequences and the odds on hitting a pipe or wire are slim IF you intended to hit one BUT, SOD's law says, a 10 mm pipe in a 12FT long floor is like a barn door to a diy floor layer, Another contributor to my income were, The householder who decided to fix that squeaky floorboard the night before the floor layer came,, knock knock pizzzzzz then a loud scream from the wife below . There;s water coming out of the ceiling.....

It was a bungalow built in1960 and built with central heating, solid fuel actually, although it was converted to gas before the end of the 1960s, and it was a pipe going to one of the radiators which was nailed through, no pipes in that bungalow went through the attic, only thing up there was a cold water header tank
